Who is an Acharya?
In Indian religions and society, an acharya is an preceptor or instructor in religious matters; founder, or leader of a sect; or a highly learned person or a title affixed to the names of learned persons.
Having experienced much of what the world has to offer, from studying at the Ivey School of Business to traveling to almost fifty countries, Vivekji still sought more. Tired of the inconsistent peace associated with extrovert pursuits, he decided to turn his journey within.
In 2005 Vivekji was accepted to the intensive residential Vedanta Course at Chinmaya Mission’s Sandeepany Sadhanalaya in India. There he studied and lived under the guidance of Pujya Swami Tejomayananda for over two years!
Discovering that the only purpose of life is to be infinitely, constantly and unconditionally happy, Vivekji continues to explore this purpose by sharing the same with others.
Through his inspiring, innovative and insightful style, Vivekji makes Vedanta relevant, relatable and reachable. Intrigued that a young-adult born and raised in Canada would walk such an untraveled path, an array of community groups, academic forums, professional associations, medical departments and religious organizations around the world (i.e. The Office of the Pentagon in Washington, Regional Mental Health Care Hospital in London, etc.) have invited Vivekji to share his wisdom on Life and living.
Amidst all his efforts, Pujya Swami Tejomayananda has continuously blessed Vivekji with greater responsibilities: in 2008 as the Resident Acharya of Chinmaya Mission Niagara, in 2011 as the Deputy Director of Chinmaya Yuva Kendra West and in 2013 as the Visiting Acharya of Chinmaya Mission Pittsburgh.
“Acharya Vivekji is really passionate about our youth and has led several camps, yatras and retreats for CHYKs. Since I met Acharya Vivekji, I am always filled with excitement at the prospect of hearing/reading one of his lectures, especially the E-Vicharas! On a personal level, reading the Reflection Adventure of the Day (RAD) that Vivekji sends out daily really helps me to stay inspired on my spiritual journey. I would definitely recommend to any young individual to see his company and learn what true happiness is and where it lies.”
Brni. Shweta Chaitanya is our own Bala Vihar child of Chinmaya Mission Houston. She joined Bala vihar at the age of 6 and graduated in 2009. Inspired by the teachings of Pujya Uncle, Pujya Aunty, as well as all of her Balavihar teachers, she made the ultimate choice of attending the Vedanta course at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya in August 2014. Just recently, Shwetaji completed the course and returned to Columbia University in New York to finish her Master’s degree, which she received this past May. She has now been posted to CM Houston and is conducting study groups as well as teaching Balavihar (11 th grade) on Sundays. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to come back and serve her beloved teachers and Chinmaya family.
